“The first love wishes to make itself richer by receiving a gift which some other can give.
“The second love wishes to make another richer by giving all that it has.
“The first love is a matter of feeling and desire. This love comes and goes as it will; we cannot call it into being by any effort of our own.
“The second love is much more a matter of the will, since to give or not to give is largely within our power.”
