Today’s Scripture

John 2:7–8 (ESV)
“Jesus said to the servants, ‘Fill the jars with water.’ And they filled them up to the brim. And he said to them, ‘Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.’ So they took it.”

Opening the Scriptures

At the wedding in Cana, a serious problem had developed. The wine had run out, and there was nothing the servants could do themselves to solve it.

Then Jesus gave them a command that may have seemed unusual: “Fill the jars with water.”

The servants did not know what Jesus was going to do. They were not given an explanation. They were simply given an instruction.

And notice what Scripture tells us: “They filled them up to the brim.”

Their responsibility was obedience. The result belonged to Christ.

This is an important lesson for every Christian. We often want God to show us the outcome before we are willing to take the next step. We want to know how the problem will be solved, where the resources will come from, or what will happen tomorrow.

But Jesus did not explain the miracle to the servants before asking them to obey.

He said, “Fill the jars.”

And they obeyed.

Living God’s Word Today

There will be circumstances this week that we cannot control and problems we cannot solve. Our responsibility is not to know everything God intends to do.

Our responsibility is to obey what He has already made clear in His Word.

When Christ commands us to forgive, we forgive.

When He commands us to love, we love.

When He commands us to serve, we serve.

When He commands us to proclaim the gospel, we proclaim it.

The servants could fill the jars, but they could not turn water into wine. That distinction matters.

We must never confuse our responsibility with God’s sovereignty.

We faithfully do what God has commanded us to do, while trusting Him to accomplish what only He can accomplish.

Today, do not become discouraged because you cannot see how everything will work out. Ask instead: What has God clearly commanded me to do?

Then faithfully do it.

Our obedience belongs to us. The outcome belongs to God.
