Today’s Scripture

John 1:50 (ESV)

“Jesus answered him, ‘Because I said to you, “I saw you under the fig tree,” do you believe? You will see greater things than these.’”

Opening the Scriptures

Nathanael had just made a remarkable confession: “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”

Jesus now challenges him to look beyond the single experience that brought him to this conclusion.

Nathanael believed because Jesus demonstrated supernatural knowledge of him. But Jesus told him:

“You will see greater things than these.”

Nathanael had seen enough to believe, but he had not yet seen the fullness of what Christ would reveal.

Ahead were miracles, authoritative teaching, the raising of the dead, the cross, and ultimately the resurrection.

His journey with Jesus was only beginning.

Living God’s Word Today

There is an important lesson here for every follower of Christ.

We must never build our faith merely upon an experience, an answered prayer, or something remarkable that happened in our lives.

Experiences can encourage us, but our faith rests upon Jesus Christ as He is revealed in God’s Word.

Sometimes we become so focused upon what God has already done that we fail to recognize that He is still shaping us, teaching us, correcting us, and calling us into deeper obedience.

Nathanael could have remained fascinated by the fact that Jesus saw him beneath the fig tree.

Jesus directed his attention forward.

“You will see greater things than these.”

Christian discipleship is not standing still and continually looking backward. It is following Christ faithfully wherever He leads.

Perhaps God has already brought you through difficult circumstances. Perhaps He has answered prayers you thought could never be answered. Give Him thanks for those things, but do not live only upon yesterday’s experiences.

Open His Word today.

Listen to what He says.

Obey what He commands.

Continue following Christ.

There is always more for us to learn about the greatness of our Savior.

Question for Today:
Are you living on yesterday’s experiences, or are you faithfully following Jesus today?

Respond: “I will keep following Christ.”
