Return of an Unclean Spirit

Matthew 12:43-45 ESV Fire Life Publishing Hendrikson "When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through waterless places, seeking rest, but finds none.

Then it says, 'I will return to my house from which I came.' And when it comes, it finds the house empty, swept, and put in order.

Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there, and the last state of that person is worse than the first. So also will it be with this evil generation."

The Syrophoenician Woman's Faith

Mark 7:24-30 ESV Fire Life Publishing Hendrikson And from there he arose and went away to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And he entered a house and did not want anyone to know, yet he could not be hidden.

But immediately a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit heard of him and came and fell down at his feet.

Now the woman was a Gentile, a Syrophoenician by birth. And she begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter.

And he said to her, "Let the children be fed first, for it is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs."

But she answered him, "Yes, Lord; yet even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs."

And he said to her, "For this statement you may go your way; the demon has left your daughter."

And she went home and found the child lying in bed and the demon gone.

2 Peter 2:19-22 ESV Fire Life Publishing Hendrikson They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption. For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved.

For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first.

For it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them.

What the true proverb says has happened to them. The dog returns to its own vomit, and the sow, after washing herself, returns to wallow in the mire."

Proverbs 26:11 ESV Fire Life Publishing Hendrikson Like a dog that returns to his vomit is a fool who repeats his folly.

Hebrews 6:4-6 ESV Fire Life Publishing Hendrikson For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit,

and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come,

and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt.
