WAIT… THAT’S IN THE BIBLE? — DAY 8
A lighthearted look at some of the wonderfully unexpected things you discover when you actually read your Bible, context still matters!
“Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.”
John 20:4
Picture it.
John is recording one of the most pivotal moments in human history.
The tomb is empty.
Jesus has risen.
Everything is about to change.
But apparently there was one tiny historical detail that simply could not be left out of the record…
JOHN BEAT PETER IN THE FOOTRACE.
John could have written:
“We ran to the tomb.”
Perfectly adequate.
But no.
“We both ran…
…but just so everyone knows…
I GOT THERE FIRST.”
And if you keep reading, John mentions AGAIN that “the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first…” entered afterward.
John.
Mate.
We heard you the first time.
Of course, context still matters. John isn’t writing a sports commentary. These details help give us an eyewitness account of what happened that morning, including how Peter and John responded differently when they arrived at the empty tomb.
But still…
Two thousand years later, billions of people have read the Gospel of John
and thanks to John 20:4, we also know:
JOHN — 1
PETER — 0
Some records apparently deserve to be preserved for eternity.
