WAIT… THAT’S IN THE BIBLE? — DAY 9

A lighthearted look at some of the wonderfully unexpected things you discover when you actually read your Bible, context still matters!

“The lookout reported, ‘He has reached them, but he isn’t coming back either. The driving is like that of Jehu son of Nimshi, he drives like a maniac.’”
2 Kings 9:20

Apparently reckless driving was recognisable LONG before cars were invented.

Picture the lookout standing on the city wall, watching a chariot approaching in the distance.

Someone asks:

“Who is it?”

And apparently the answer is basically:

“Can’t see his face yet…

…but judging by the driving…

THAT’S JEHU.”

Jehu apparently had such a distinctive driving style that people could recognise him FROM A DISTANCE.

No licence plate.

No number plate recognition.

No GPS.

Just:

“Yep. Look at that bloke drive.

Definitely Jehu.”

Suddenly the next time someone cuts you off in traffic, changes lanes without indicating, or flies past you like they’re competing in the Chariot Grand Prix…

you have a biblical name for them.

“Calm down, Jehu.”

Of course, context still matters! This isn’t really a Bible verse about bad driving. Jehu had been anointed king and was racing toward Jezreel as part of a very serious moment of judgment against the house of Ahab. His furious driving helped the watchman identify who was approaching before Jehu even reached the city.

But still…

Imagine being known so well for the way you drive that people can identify you before they can even see your face.

Some people have a signature.

Jehu apparently had a driving style.

BIBLICAL TRAFFIC REPORT:

Chariot approaching at high speed.

Driver appears slightly unhinged.

Almost certainly Jehu.
