WAIT… THAT’S IN THE BIBLE? — DAY 11 A lighthearted look at some of the wonderfully unexpected things you discover when you actually read your Bible, context still matters! “Seated in a window was a young man named Eutychus, who was sinking into a deep sleep as Paul talked on and on. When he was sound asleep, he fell to the ground from the third story and was picked up dead.” Acts 20:9 If you have ever struggled to stay awake during a long lecture, presentation or church sermon… spare a thought for Eutychus. Paul was preaching. It was getting late. Eutychus was sitting in the window. His eyes started closing… And apparently nobody had completed the church Workplace Health & Safety risk assessment. Three storeys later, poor Eutychus became perhaps the most famous person in history to learn: IF YOU’RE GOING TO FALL ASLEEP DURING THE SERMON, DON’T SIT IN THE WINDOW. Thankfully, the story doesn’t end there. Paul went downstairs, embraced him, and Eutychus was restored to life. And then THEY WENT BACK UPSTAIRS AND PAUL KEPT TALKING UNTIL DAYLIGHT. Imagine being Eutychus. You fall three storeys. You die. You get brought back to life. And somebody says: “Righto everyone… back upstairs. Paul’s not finished.” 🤣 Context still matters! This isn’t really a story about a boring preacher. Paul was spending precious final hours teaching believers before leaving them, and God’s power was dramatically displayed through Eutychus’s restoration. But still… Next time your pastor says, “Just one more point…” perhaps move away from the window.
