“After they had gone a long time without food, Paul stood up before them and said, ‘Men, you should have taken my advice not to sail from Crete; then you would have spared yourselves this damage and loss.’” Acts 27:21
Imagine the scene.
You’re trapped aboard a ship in a violent storm.
The ship is being battered.
The wind is howling.
Cargo has been thrown overboard.
Nobody has eaten properly.
Everyone thinks they’re going to die.
Then Paul stands up.
Finally! A word of encouragement!
Paul:
“Men…”
Everyone looks up.
“…YOU SHOULD HAVE LISTENED TO ME.”
Paul!
READ THE ROOM!
There is a time and a place for “I told you so.”
Apparently Paul decided:
SHIPWRECK.
Thankfully, he didn’t stop there.
Paul went on to tell them to take courage because God had assured him that not one of them would lose their life.
So context still matters!
Paul wasn’t simply enjoying the greatest “I told you so” opportunity in maritime history. His previous warning had proved true, giving the frightened crew a very good reason to listen carefully to what he told them next.
But still…
If you ever give someone advice, they ignore it, and everything goes spectacularly wrong…
you could graciously encourage them.
OR…
apparently you could begin with:
“You should have taken my advice.”
There really is a verse for everything.
