But tormented by thirst, they continued to argue with Moses. “Why did you bring us out of Egypt? Are you trying to kill us, our children, and our livestock with thirst?” Exodus 17:3

The theme of today’s devotion is Desert Sand/Promised Land and was written by Craig Sander.

I could spend my limited space in discussing the text or in anecdotes of God’s provision, all worthy goals. However, I encourage you to dig into it yourselves, realizing how much we are like them, grumbling against God, testing Him.

I would like to go beyond the norm, into overlooked provisions. A common meal prayer is, “God is great. God is good. Let us thank Him for our food,” or maybe more advanced, “Lord, bless this food to the nourishment of our bodies, and we thank you for providing it.” Yes, the meal is something to be thankful for, but God provides us nerves and taste buds to enjoy the food! There was spiritual work at play with all the quail and manna for every meal for so long that we will sidestep here for brevity. But God could make us like plants, to just absorb what we need to live. He provides for us in little pleasures, like the thrill of a run or a hike to see His beauty in nature.

For centuries, theologians have founded our faith on “Truth, Beauty, and Goodness.” Why? Teleology is the term we can apply for one form of God’s revelation, primarily through nature, such as in the hymn “This is My Father’s World.” Why do we have art and music? The Bible tells of music in heaven, angels singing, even that we are sung over as we sleep. Obviously, God is giving us a taste of heaven, and revealing to us a little about Himself. Do you think God never laughs, like in most of the movies? Absolutely not! He obviously likes a good joke because He created humor, and there is not one square inch of the creation that He made in which He does not declare “mine”!

I urge you to pause and do more than “smell the roses”, but to ask yourself why we smell, why do they smell, why do we find pleasure in the scent? God provides us little blessings that really are not so little, as anyone who lost their sense of taste or smell can attest. He loves us so much that He doesn’t just “provide” for us, He freely and lovingly gives us in abundance, like the wine at the wedding in Cana.

Lord, thank You for providing what we need, but also providing for us in abundance and in pleasure. In the deserts of life, when we are literally or figuratively hungry and thirsty, remove the scales from our eyes and hearts to realize how lovingly You provide the blessings that make life joyful. Amen.
