“WHEN I CANNOT SEE HIS HAND”
WHEN I CANNOT FIND HIM
Job 23:8–10 (LLV) —
“If I go forward, He is not there; if I go backward, I cannot perceive Him. When He is at work on the left, I cannot see Him; when He turns to the right, I cannot find Him. But He knows the way that I take; when He has tested me, I shall come forth as gold.”
Sometimes
we look
for God
everywhere.
We pray.
We search
His Word.
We look back
at circumstances.
We look ahead
for some sign
of what
He is doing.
And still,
we cannot
find Him.
Job understood.
“If I go
forward,
He is
not there.”
“If I go
backward,
I cannot
perceive Him.”
To the left.
To the right.
Job searches
every direction.
God seems
nowhere
to be found.
There is something
almost unsettling
about these words
being in
the Bible.
We might expect
Scripture to say:
“If you have
enough faith,
you will always
feel God's presence.”
Job says
something
very different.
He believed
in God.
He longed
for God.
He searched
for God.
And still
he could not
perceive Him.
Faith
does not guarantee
that we will always
understand
where God is
or what
He is doing.
There are seasons
when His work
is hidden
from us.
But then
Job reaches
verse 10.
And everything
turns
on one word:
“But.”
I cannot
find Him.
But He knows.
I cannot see
where He is.
But He knows
where I am.
“He knows
the way
that I take.”
Job suddenly
changes
the direction
of his confidence.
His security
no longer depends
upon his ability
to locate God.
It depends
upon God's ability
to locate him.
And God
has never
lost sight
of Job.
Not for
a moment.
Perhaps
we sometimes
imagine
that when
we cannot see
God's hand,
we have somehow
wandered beyond
His attention.
But our inability
to see Him
does not mean
He cannot
see us.
The child
may lose sight
of the parent
in a crowd.
The parent
may still know
exactly
where the child is.
Then Job says:
“When He
has tested me,
I shall come forth
as gold.”
Job does not yet
understand
his suffering.
He does not know
how his story
will end.
But he believes
something is happening
that he cannot
yet see.
Gold
does not understand
the fire.
But the refiner
understands
the gold.
And perhaps
that is enough
for today.
We do not
have to understand
every difficult season
while we are
inside it.
We do not
have to see
where God
is working.
We can rest
in something
far more certain:
He knows
the way
that I take.
A new beginning sometimes comes when I stop asking whether I can see God and remember that God can always see me:
I may not know where He is working, but He knows exactly where I am.
Reflection: Am I allowing my inability to see what God is doing to convince me that He has lost sight of me?
Prayer: Heavenly Father, there are times when I search for Your hand and cannot see it. I look ahead, behind, and all around me, yet I still do not understand what You are doing. When that happens, remind me of Job's confidence: You know the way that I take. Thank You that I am never hidden from Your sight. When I cannot trace Your hand, teach me to trust that You still know exactly where I am and what You are accomplishing within me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
