While the church in Ephesus hated “the deeds of the Nicolaitans” (Revelation 2:6), members of the church of Pergamos “[held to] the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate” (v. 15). Just as Balaam (a name meaning “one who devours”) led the Israelites astray through compromise with the Moabites in idolatrous worship and sexual immorality, so the Nicolaitans led believers in Pergamos to reject the commandments of God.

The basic belief of the Nicolaitans permeates most Christian churches today. Antinomianism (“against the law”) is found among those churches that claim that Christ did away with the law of God, the Ten Commandments. But this is an erroneous understanding of not being “under the law but under grace” (Romans 6:14). The Nicolaitans also believed that what we do with our bodies doesn’t matter; however, the Bible teaches that the sinful use of our bodies does bear on our salvation.

Scripture says that Christians should “be doers of the word, and not hearers only” (James 1:22). The apostle Paul clarifies that living by faith does not mean tossing away the law. “Do we then make void the law through faith? Certainly not! On the contrary, we establish the law” (Romans 3:31).

Thus, there is a difference between keeping the law through the power of Christ living in our hearts and keeping the law as a mere exercise to earn salvation. It was the latter that Paul warned against: “By the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin” (Romans 3:20). The only way to overcome such false teachings is by “the sword of My mouth”—that is, combating error with the Word of God.

“He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him—the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day” (John 12:48). God hates error because it leads to death. That’s why there is nothing more helpful to save people from eternal loss than teaching them the Bible truth, words that bring life.

“Sing them over again to me, wonderful words of life; let me more of their beauty see, wonderful words of life!”
