🔥 FAITH WORKING THROUGH LOVE, THE ENGINE OF LIVING FAITH “For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love.” Galatians 5:6 NKJV There is a powerful truth hidden in those words, “faith working through love.” The Greek word for faith is pistis, meaning faith, trust, confidence, or persuasion. The word translated working is energeō, meaning to be active, operative, or at work. And love is agapē, the self-giving love that reflects the nature and character of God. Paul is showing us that biblical faith was never intended to operate independently of love. Faith works through love. Why is this so important? Because 1 John 4:8 says, “God is love.” Faith places our confidence in God, and the God in whom we place our faith is love. Therefore, genuine faith should increasingly express the character of the One in whom we believe. Now consider James 2:17: “Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” James uses the Greek word nekros, meaning dead or lifeless. James isn't attacking faith. He is describing faith that produces no corresponding action. Look at the examples surrounding his teaching. Someone is hungry. Someone needs clothing. Someone needs help. Living faith doesn't simply say, “God bless you.” Living faith moves. Living faith gives. Living faith serves. Living faith loves. This agrees beautifully with Galatians 5:6. Paul says faith works through love, while James says living faith produces action. Then Paul gives us an even stronger warning: “And though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.” 1 Corinthians 13:2 NKJV Think about that. You can understand doctrine. You can confess Scripture. You can exercise spiritual gifts. You can even possess mountain-moving faith. But without love, something essential is missing. ❤️ Love also affects how we stand in faith. Jesus connects believing prayer with forgiveness in Mark 11:22–25. We cannot separate our faith toward God from the condition of our hearts toward people. Bitterness, resentment, hatred, and unforgiveness are contrary to the love through which faith is called to work. Faith is also not a mechanical formula for getting something from God. Faith is trust in a Person. This becomes especially important when we understand our inheritance in Christ. Children don't receive an inheritance because they mastered a formula. They receive because they belong to the family. Abraham believed God, but his faith produced covenant obedience. He went when God said go. He trusted when circumstances looked impossible. He obeyed when his faith was tested. His faith wasn't merely something he confessed. His faith shaped how he lived. Without love, faith can become ideology. Without love, doctrine can become a weapon. Without love, inheritance can become entitlement. But when faith works through love: Faith becomes transformative. Doctrine becomes life-giving. Inheritance becomes stewardship. And our lives begin revealing Jesus. Jesus said: “By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” John 13:35 NKJV So perhaps we should ask ourselves: Is my faith producing love? Am I forgiving? Am I serving? Am I helping? Am I speaking truth in love? 🔥 Faith connects us to God. God is love. Faith works through love. And living faith produces loving action. “And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” 1 Corinthians 13:13 NKJV 🙏 Father, teach us to walk in faith that works through love. Purify our motives, remove bitterness and unforgiveness, and let the love of Christ govern our words and actions. May our faith produce obedience, compassion, forgiveness, and service, so this world can see Jesus living through us. In Jesus' name, Amen.
