Speak, Lord, Your Servant Is Listening

1 Samuel 3:10 (NKJV)
“Now the LORD came and stood and called as at other times, ‘Samuel! Samuel!’ And Samuel answered, ‘Speak, for Your servant hears.’”
Learning to Hear and Obey God
First Samuel 3 records a major turning point in Samuel's life. Samuel had been faithfully serving in the house of the Lord under Eli, but he had not yet learned to recognize when God was speaking directly to him.
The chapter begins during a spiritually dark period in Israel. The Word of the Lord was rare, spiritual leadership had become compromised, and there was no widespread revelation. Yet while the nation was experiencing spiritual decline, God was quietly preparing a servant who would listen to His voice.
One night Samuel heard someone calling his name.
“Samuel!”
Samuel immediately ran to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.”
But Eli had not called him.
This happened again, and Samuel returned to Eli. Eventually Eli realized that the Lord was calling the young man. He instructed Samuel that if the voice came again, he should respond to God.
Then the Lord called once more:
“Samuel! Samuel!”
Samuel answered with the words that should describe the heart of every believer:
“Speak, for Your servant hears.”
Samuel was available.
Samuel was listening.
Samuel was willing to obey.
God then entrusted Samuel with a difficult message concerning judgment upon Eli's household. Samuel was afraid to tell Eli what God had revealed, but when Eli asked him, Samuel faithfully communicated the entire message.
This reveals an important truth about hearing from God: we must be willing to obey what He says, even when the message is difficult.
We sometimes want God to speak because we want encouragement, direction, or confirmation. But God's Word also corrects us, challenges us, exposes sin, and calls us to obedience.
A servant does not say, “Speak, Lord, as long as I agree.”
A servant says, “Speak, Lord. I am listening.”
As Samuel continued growing, the Lord was with him and established him as a prophet throughout Israel. The young boy who first struggled to recognize God's voice became a man known for faithfully declaring God's Word.
Samuel's ministry began with listening.
The same principle remains true for believers today. We live in a world filled with competing voices—culture, entertainment, social media, opinions, fears, ambitions, and personal desires. But above every other voice, we need to hear the truth God has already given us through His Word.
The question is not simply whether God has spoken.
The question is whether we are listening.

1. Am I spending enough time in God's Word to recognize His truth clearly?
2. When Scripture challenges or corrects me, am I willing to obey?
3. What distractions may be preventing me from listening carefully to the Lord?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, give me a heart like Samuel that is ready to listen and willing to obey. Quiet the distractions around me and help me treasure Your Word above every other voice. When Your truth encourages me, help me receive it. When it corrects me, give me humility to respond. When You call me to obedience, give me courage to follow. May my heart continually say, “Speak, Lord, Your servant is listening.” In Jesus' name, Amen.
