Your Kingdom Come, Your Will Be Done — Matthew 6:10
As we continue meditating on Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, we come to one of the most beautiful and meaningful teachings about prayer. The disciples asked Jesus, “Lord, teach us how to pray.” In response, Jesus revealed a divine perspective of prayer—prayer is not simply asking God for what we want; it is seeking the heart, purposes, and will of our Heavenly Father.
Jesus taught His disciples to pray, “Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10). These words reveal an important kingdom principle: God desires His children to seek His rule and reign in every area of their lives.
Prayer establishes and deepens our relationship with our Heavenly Father. He is our loving Father, our provider, our protector, and the One who cares deeply for His children. Therefore, our prayer should begin with a desire that His name be hallowed and glorified through our lives. We are called to live in obedience, purity, holiness, and love so that His character may be reflected through us.
“Your kingdom come” means that we desire God’s heavenly rule to become evident in our hearts, minds, families, relationships, churches, and communities. When God rules our hearts through the power of the Holy Spirit, His forgiveness, love, peace, righteousness, and grace begin to transform our lives. Evil thoughts, sinful actions, hatred, unforgiveness, and selfishness should have no place where God’s kingdom is welcomed.
“Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” is a powerful prayer of surrender. It means choosing God’s purposes above our own desires and trusting that His plans are good for us, both now and for eternity.
So, let us ask ourselves: Are we truly seeking the heart and will of our Heavenly Father when we pray? Let us pray these words with understanding and sincerity, allowing their meaning to become deeply rooted in our hearts.
