THE STRENGTH OF A GUARDED HEART
Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control.
Proverbs 25:28
In biblical times city walls were the primary defense against enemies. A city with broken walls was completely vulnerable and lacked the security needed to protect its people. This proverb uses that imagery to show us that self-control acts as a protective wall for our hearts and souls. When we lack this fruit of the Spirit we become reactive and defensive. Without the boundary of self-control we are left at the mercy of every passing temptation and emotionally charged situation. A breach in these walls means our defenses have failed and we are easily swayed by our own passions.

Jesus is our strong tower and our ultimate example of a perfectly restrained King. In the wilderness He faced intense temptation yet His self-control never wavered. Even when He faced the anger of His enemies and the agony of the cross He never acted out of selfish ambition or harshness. He remained steady and focused on the Father’s will. The beauty of Jesus is that He does not just judge our broken walls. He is the one who redeems and repairs them. Through the Holy Spirit He produces the fruit of self-control in us and becomes the refuge that we could never build on our own.

Today we can examine our lives to identify where our walls might be down. Perhaps there is a breach in how we use our tongues or how we manage our anger. We do not have to rely on our own willpower to fix these areas. Instead we can turn to Jesus and ask Him to rebuild our defenses. As we depend on His strength He restores our security and helps us walk in the freedom of a guarded heart that reflects His peace.
God bless you!
