Amazing Facts

Owls are known for their ability to detect the faintest sounds, but did you know that they have mismatched ears? These nocturnal birds have one ear positioned slightly more forward on their heads than the other ear. This allows them to pinpoint the location of prey while hunting in the dark.

Though living in an especially sinful region of the ancient world, the Christians of Pergamos were encouraged to “hear what the Spirit says.” Such spiritual listening skills—for Christians of all ages—are developed by reading and hearing the Word daily.

While the Nicolaitans did overcome some in Pergamos through false teachings about God’s law, the Lord promises to those who overcome such lies the precious gift of “hidden manna,” a callback to the manna hidden in the ark of the covenant. “Moses said to Aaron, ‘Take a pot and put an omer of manna in it, and lay it up before the Lord, to be kept for your generations’” (Exodus 16:33).

Jesus spoke of Himself and His life-giving words as manna—that is, the bread of heaven. The Jews once said to Him:

Our fathers ate the manna in the desert; as it is written, “He gave them bread from heaven to eat.” Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” Then they said to Him, “Lord, give us this bread always” (John 6:31–34).

Receiving this manna signifies the gift of eternal life (John 6:27, 51).

Also promised here was a white stone with a new name written on it. Ancient judges often used a white stone to indicate that a person was pardoned—a black stone if guilty. What valuable gifts come to overcomers in Christ!

Give me spiritual ears to hear, O Lord, the words of life and truth that I may overcome the errors of this world.
