*Mirage...*
"As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You, O God... When shall I come and appear before God?" (Psalm 42)
We are familiar with the mirages that appear during the summer season. To our eyes, it looks as though there is water in the distance; yet, when we approach the spot, there is no water to be found.
Just like us, animals in the wilderness often mistake this mirage for actual water and are disappointed. A swift-footed deer, driven by thirst, wanders in search of water. It runs frantically toward the distant mirage, believing it to be water, only to become exhausted.
Like these deer, the saints of the Old Testament yearned to enter the presence of the Lord. This was because not everyone could enter the Holy Place. One had to be born into the priestly class of the Tribe of Levi—specifically as a son of a priest. Furthermore, to become the High Priest, one had to be born into the lineage of Aaron. Thus, it was not possible for everyone.
Just as *deer pant and cry out for water brooks*, everyone who lived in the Old Testament era—including David, who was born of the Tribe of Judah—longed to enter the presence of the Lord found within the Most Holy Place.
Not just anyone was permitted to enter. To enter the Lord's presence, one had to be born into the Tribe of Levi—specifically into the lineage of Aaron—and wear the priestly garments and the ephod. Even then, they could not remain there indefinitely; they could enter only according to the prescribed schedule and order. It was precisely because of these many restrictions that the people yearned to enter the presence of the Lord. We who live under the New Covenant are blessed, for God constantly dwells with us and within us. We need not wander far and wide to experience His presence; if we accept Him as our God and walk in the ways He has prescribed, His unchanging presence will always abide within us.
