WHY DID GOD CREATE THE SABBATH BEFORE THERE WAS A JEW?

One of the most important questions about the Sabbath is this: If the Sabbath was only for the Jews, why did God establish it before any Jew existed?

The answer is found in the very beginning.

«“And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.” — Genesis 2:3»

The Sabbath was not first introduced at Mount Sinai. It was not created after Abraham. It was not given because the Israelites became Jews.

The Sabbath was created in Eden.

At that time:

- There was no Jew.
- There was no Israel.
- There was no Moses.
- There were no Ten Commandments written on stone.
- There was no Sinai.

There were only God and the human family He had created.

This reveals a powerful truth: The Sabbath was made for humanity, not for one race alone.

Jesus Himself confirmed this when He said:

«“The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath.” — Mark 2:27»

Notice that Jesus did not say, “The Sabbath was made for the Jew.” He said it was made for man—humanity.

The Sabbath was God's gift to Adam and Eve before sin entered the world. After six days of creation, God set apart the seventh day. He blessed it. He sanctified it. He made it holy.

Why?

Because humanity needed a special appointment with its Creator.

Every Sabbath declares:

GOD IS MY CREATOR.
I DO NOT BELONG TO MYSELF.
MY TIME BELONGS TO GOD.
I TRUST HIM MORE THAN MY WORK.
I REST IN THE ONE WHO MADE ME.

Later, when God gave the Ten Commandments, He did not create a new Sabbath. He said:

«“Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.” — Exodus 20:8»

You can only remember something that already exists.

And the commandment points us back to Creation:

«“For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day.” — Exodus 20:11»

The Sabbath reaches backward to Creation, not merely to the Jewish nation.

That is why the Sabbath is not a racial institution. It is a creation institution.

Adam was not a Jew.

Eve was not a Jew.

Yet God blessed and sanctified the seventh day while they were still the representatives of the entire human family.

So when someone says, “The Sabbath is only for the Jews,” ask them this simple question:

Why did God create it before there was a Jew?

The answer is clear:

Because the Sabbath was created for humanity.

The seventh-day Sabbath stands as a memorial of the Creator. And until the end, God's people are called to worship Him:

«“Him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.” — Revelation 14:7»

The God who created the Sabbath in Eden is still worthy of worship today.

The Sabbath was given before the Jewish nation existed because God's gift was larger than one nation. It was given to mankind.

The Sabbath began in Creation, was remembered at Sinai, honored by Jesus, and remains a sacred memorial of the Creator.

The Sabbath is not Jewish because it began before there was a Jew. It is God's holy gift to the human family.
