A Living God

“Rejoice in that day and leap for joy! For indeed your reward is great in heaven, for in like manner their fathers did to the prophets.” Luke 6:23

I had just graduated from the Leningrad Institute of Film Directors as a sound technician and was on a train to my first job when I met Ivan. His pure, deep love won my heart, and two years later, we were engaged. I enjoyed my work, my future husband and his family adored me, and I was caught up in the pleasures of this world. I didn’t need God, because my happiness was unshakable.

But one day, it all ended tragically when Ivan died at work. The memories were unbearable, so I moved to another city but had a hard time finding a job in my field. I took whatever job I could find, and since I had to travel often and look after my elderly parents on weekends, I never married.

After my father died, my mother was bedridden and lost her apartment. She came to stay with me, but as things got worse, we were kicked out of where we were living several times. In desperation, I’d recite the Lord’s Prayer without understanding it. Then, just before my mother died, I got a one-room apartment and met a lady who worked in the building’s housekeeping department.

She was a believer, and she taught me how to pray. “Start your prayer by saying, ‘Living God, through Jesus Christ I turn to You with my request,’ and then tell God what you need,” she instructed me. I decided to take her advice, and one day I asked Him to help me make peace with a woman who never answered my greetings. That was my first prayer ever, and miraculously, the woman began talking to me! Now I was convinced that God would answer my requests, but I still didn’t grasp the idea of talking to Him every day.

One year before my retirement, my boss decided to give my job to someone else and set me up not only for dismissal—but also on criminal charges! When my friend heard about this, she began praying for me, as did her church friends.

I was amazed at how simply I made my case. It was as if Someone was feeding me all the right words, and not only did the deputy chief take my side, he also ardently defended my rights. In the end, God won, and I worked there until I retired.

Naturally, I wanted to learn more about this living God, so I began attending a church where they studied the Bible. The more I learned about Him, the more I wanted to read His Word. I started telling people about God, and with the last money I had, I bought Bibles and gave them out.

Once I approached a group of young teens who were smoking. I prayed for the right words, then asked them not to ruin their lives through that habit. They listened graciously, and to my amazement, when I invited them to pray, they knelt with me and even asked me to pray for several of their friends, too! On another occasion, I watched a policeman pull a young man suffering from severe hunger out of a basement and take him to the hospital. When I found out he was an orphan, I decided to take him home with me after he recovered. I gave him a Bible, and as I talked to him about Jesus, he soaked up every word. Sadly, he died the next day, but I hope to meet him at the Second Coming of our Lord!

God cares about us as if we were His only child, and He gives us joy in every difficult situation. Before I met Jesus, I never felt such joy—even in my happiest moments. But now, I feel joy in His presence, although I live on meager means. If I didn’t know God at my age, I’d be waiting for death. But instead, I wait for eternal life and eternal joy!
