Matthew 22:15-40
In this passage, the leaders of Israel presented to Jesus three tests. In these tests, remember they are not honest truth seekers, they are not seeking an honest answer to their question, they are seeking a way to present two options for the answer. Either one of the options they give him to choose from would anger half the people causing those people to withdraw from Jesus.
The first test is a political one. At issue, the law required a payment of a poll tax to Rome using a coin bearing Ceasar's likeness and making a claim that using a pagan coin goes against God's law. There were those who insisted that to pay a poll tax amounted to pagan worship and therefore they should not pay the tax.
This position however encourages the faithful to “obey God” by violating Roman law. And violating the law of the land you live in was also prohibited by God. So in the Pharisees minds, they've given him 2 options either one of which would anger half the crowd, thereby isolating Jesus from half of those supporting Him.
But Jesus chooses a third option that doesn't make itself obvious. Jesus takes the question and removes it from its political roots and asks a simple question, ‘whose image is on the coin?‘ They answer truthfully, ‘Ceasars’ And Jesus's answer is this, if his image is on it, it is His coin. Pay it. No hand wringing about the ‘rightness’ of it all just “God doesn't care about your political point as much as you pretend He does.”
Next, the Sadducees were a sect of Judaism that accepted only the books written by Moses and therefore denied the Resurrection after death. They had just witnessed their rival Pharisees get audibly spanked by Jesus and perhaps they felt rocky.
And they use a basic argument against the Resurrection being real by using a common argument. A woman marries a man who dies before conceiving a son, his brother then raises up a child who he conceived but who is named for the dead brother. In this scenario, the wife manages to marry each of these men who were brothers.
Each brother then up and dies so, Jesus, whose wife is she in the Resurrection? No answer was going to satisfy the Sadducees because they denied the Scriptures stance and did not accept any book outside Genesis through Deuteronomy as authoritative. Jesus must have been looking at them like, “what ?”
For them, this was a serious question. But Jesus said, you don't understand the power of God, or the Scriptures. In heaven, there is no husband's, no wives, no marriage. So the question of whose wife she'll be is not only irrelevant, it fundamentally misunderstands our nature upon being raised from the dead.
Jesus then points out that God is still calied The God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob after the physical deaths of all 3. Does that then make God the God of the dead, not the living? So now Jesus has laid a verbal beat down on the Pharisees and the Sadducees and both times they were forced to retreat in shame.
The enemy of my enemy is my friend. The Pharisees and Sadducees hated each other. But in Jesus these two enemies found an enemy in common. So the verbally trumped Sadducees now team up with the previously verbally spanked Pharisees for a final test.
So they settle on the ridiculous argument of which law was most important. And this topic, believe it or not was extremely important to those with little to do in life. There were always those whose entire passion was to argue about everything.
Perhaps they believed Jesus would choose one of the ten commandments, He didn't. He chose the love of God first and foremost. And if a person is loving God with all his heart, his soul and his strength, the rest of the law is inconsequential.
And after we have determined to put God first, we should then place others next and love them as much as we love ourselves. Each test had Jesus given a choice, one He can't win or choose correctly simply based on the motivations of the ones asking. Jesus chose correctly, confounding the Jewish leaders.
And so ends the lesson on the 3 tests of Jesus.

[16] And they *sent their disciples to Him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that You are truthful and teach the way of God in truth, and do not care what anyone thinks; for You are not partial to anyone. [17] Tell us then, what do You think? Is it permissible to pay a poll-tax to Caesar, or not?” [18] But Jesus perceived their malice, and said, “Why are you testing Me, you hypocrites? [19] Show Me the coin used for the poll-tax.” And they brought Him a denarius. [20] And He *said to them, “Whose image and inscription is this?” [21] They *said to Him, “Caesar’s.” Then He *said to them, “Then pay to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s; and to God the things that are God’s.” [22] And hearing this, they were amazed; and they left Him and went away. [23] On that day some Sadducees (who say there is no resurrection) came to Jesus and questioned Him, [24] saying, “Teacher, Moses said, ‘If a man dies having no children, his brother as next of kin shall marry his wife, and raise up children for his brother.’ [25] Now there were seven brothers among us; and the first married and died, and having no children, he left his wife to his brother. [26] It was the same also with the second brother, and the third, down to the seventh. [27] Last of all, the woman died. [28] In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had her in marriage.” [29] But Jesus answered and said to them, “You are mistaken, since you do not understand the Scriptures nor the power of God. [30] For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. [31] But regarding the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God: [32] ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not the God of the dead, but of the living.” [33] When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at His teaching. [34] But when the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. [35] And one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him: [36] “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” [37] And He said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ [38] This is the great and foremost commandment. [39] The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ [40] Upon these two commandments hang the whole Law and the Prophets.”
