Today’s Scripture
John 2:22 (ESV)
“When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.”
Opening the Scriptures
John now brings the entire temple conversation into focus.
Jesus had cleansed the temple because His Father’s house was being misused. When the Jewish authorities demanded a sign proving His authority, Jesus answered, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” They thought He was speaking about the temple building, but John explained that Jesus was speaking about His own body.
Now John tells us what happened after Jesus was raised from the dead.
The disciples remembered what Jesus had said.
At the time Jesus spoke these words, they did not fully understand their meaning. Later, after they had witnessed His crucifixion and resurrection, His words became clear.
This is important because John does not present the resurrection as an idea the disciples invented after Jesus died. Jesus had already pointed toward what was going to happen.
The cross did not take Jesus by surprise, and the resurrection was not an unexpected recovery from defeat. Jesus knew that He would die, and He knew that He would rise again.
After the resurrection, the disciples looked back and understood more clearly what Jesus had been teaching them.
Living God’s Word Today
There is an important lesson here about how faith grows.
John tells us that the disciples “believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.”
Their faith was being strengthened by remembering and understanding what God had already revealed.
This teaches us that Christian faith is not built upon feelings, circumstances, or human imagination. It rests upon the trustworthy Word of God and upon Jesus Christ, whose words are completely true.
There will be times when we read Scripture and do not immediately understand everything we are reading. There will also be times when God’s purposes in our lives are difficult to understand.
The disciples experienced this themselves.
They heard Jesus speak about His death and resurrection, but they did not yet understand the full meaning of His words. Later, after the resurrection, they remembered what He had said and understood it more clearly.
This should teach us humility and patience.
We should never assume that because we do not presently understand something in Scripture, there must be something wrong with Scripture. Our understanding is limited. God’s Word is not.
We must continue reading, studying, remembering, and comparing Scripture with Scripture. As we grow in our knowledge of God’s Word, passages that once seemed difficult can become clearer because we begin to see how they fit within the whole message of Scripture.
There is also great encouragement here when we face difficult circumstances.
Sometimes we understand God’s faithfulness more clearly when we look backward.
There may have been moments in your life when you could not understand why God allowed something to happen. Yet later, you were able to see more clearly how He sustained you, corrected you, protected you, or used that experience to deepen your dependence upon Him.
We must be careful, however, not to claim that we can always explain God’s hidden purposes. Scripture does not promise that every question will be answered during this life.
Our confidence rests somewhere stronger than our ability to explain our circumstances.
Our confidence rests upon what God has revealed in His Word and upon the risen Jesus Christ.
The disciples did not finally believe because everything in life suddenly made sense. They believed because Christ had risen, His words had proved true, and the Scriptures could be trusted.
The same foundation remains for us today.
One Concrete Practice Today
Take one promise or teaching of Scripture that has strengthened you during a difficult period of your life and read it again today.
Remember how God’s Word sustained you then, and write down one sentence explaining why that same truth can be trusted today.
Do not base your confidence upon how you feel today. Base it upon what God has said.
Closing Encouragement
The disciples did not understand everything immediately, but Jesus’ words did not fail.
After the resurrection, they remembered, understood, and believed.
There may be things you do not understand today. You may not know why God has permitted certain circumstances or what tomorrow will bring. But you do not need every answer in order to trust the One who has already demonstrated His faithfulness.
Jesus Christ has risen from the dead. His Word is true, and the Scripture can be trusted.
Therefore, keep reading His Word, keep remembering what He has said, and keep trusting Him even when you cannot yet see the whole picture.
Question for Today
When circumstances are difficult to understand, are you allowing your feelings to determine what you believe, or are you resting upon the truth of God’s Word?
Respond: “I will trust the risen Christ and believe His Word.”
