Labor Day Encouragement — Giving Thanks for the Work of Our Hands
Today, as we celebrate Labor Day, let us pause and give thanks to Almighty God for the privilege and blessing of work.
Work is not merely a means of earning a living. From the beginning, God gave mankind the responsibility to work, care for His creation, provide for our families, serve our neighbors, and use the abilities He has entrusted to us for His glory.
Today, we give thanks for the countless men and women whose daily labor helps sustain our communities and our nation. We remember those who work in factories, farms, hospitals, schools, businesses, churches, public services, and countless other places. Much of their work may never receive public recognition, but faithful work has dignity and value before God.
As Christians, we should remember that ultimately we do not work merely for ourselves or for other people. Whatever responsibility God has placed before us, we should approach it as service rendered to Him.
Scripture reminds us, “And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.” — Colossians 3:23
This truth reaches far beyond our paid employment. Some of us may be retired, yet God still gives us work to do. We can pray, encourage others, serve those in need, teach His Word, support the work of the Gospel, and share Jesus Christ with those He places in our lives.
There is no retirement from faithfully serving our Lord.
As we enjoy this Labor Day, let us therefore thank God for the strength, abilities, opportunities, and resources He has provided. Let us also remember those who are struggling to find employment, those whose work is difficult or dangerous, and those who labor faithfully while receiving little recognition.
May we use whatever abilities and opportunities God has given us faithfully, remembering that every day provides another opportunity to serve Him and others.
May Almighty God bless the work of our hands, keep our hearts humble, and help us remember that everything we accomplish is possible only through His grace and provision.
