*TWO MEN WENT TO A VILLAGE CALLED EMAUSI*

*Part 1c – Their Eyes Were Opened When Bread Was Broken*

> *Luke 24:14–16*
> They were talking together about all these things that had happened. While they were talking about these things, Jesus himself approached and walked with them; but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him.
>
> *Luke 24:30–35*
> And as he sat with them at the table, he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he disappeared from their sight.
> They said to one another, “Did not our hearts burn within us while he walked and talked to us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”
> Then they got up at once and returned to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them gathered together, saying, “It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.” Then the two told what had happened on the road, and how Jesus was recognized by them in the breaking of the bread.

*Why Were Their Eyes Closed?*
These men were spiritually blind. They spoke about Jesus but did not recognize him. Jesus was preached to the blind.
This blindness is the sickness that Christ came to heal. Sin closes the heart, and every sinner is spiritually blind.

*The Work of Christ*
> *Luke 4:18–19*
> “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach good tidings to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord.”
>
Jesus declares: I am sent to heal the blind. He is the Word of God (John 1:1, 14; Revelation 19:13). The anointed Word is sent that the blind may see.

*Spiritual Blindness*
> *2 Corinthians 4:4*
> The god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, that they should not see the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God.
>
This “god of this world” is Satan (John 12:31; 16:11). The spiritually blind are characterized by the following:
- Not believing in the Word of Christ.
- Adhering to false gospels and human traditions.
- Doing evil.
- Blaspheming the living God.
- Being false Christians (antichrists), who preach against the truth.

*God’s Love Manifested*
These two men recognized Jesus when he broke the bread. Luke 24:30–35 shows that the breaking of the bread opened their eyes.
Compare this with *Matthew 26:26*:
> While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.”

*The Meaning of Bread*
- The blessed bread is life (Acts 3:26).
- This bread is his body – the Church (Colossians 1:18).
- The Church is the body, the bread, the food that opens the eyes of the blind.
When the two men ate the bread, they were enlightened. They ate the Church—the blessed body—and were awakened to salvation.

*Jesus the Living Bread*
> *John 6:35, 50–51*
> “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst. This is the bread which comes down from heaven, so that whoever eats of it may not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”

*What did Jesus mean?*
- “I am the Church (the body-bread) which comes down from heaven.”
- “I am the Church which gives eternal life.”
Two blind men were made alive when they ate this bread which came down from heaven. Their eyes were opened, they entered the Church, and they knew the living God.

Now, you too may be among the blind, but if you hear the Word and believe, you will be saved. Amen.

May we all grow in the faith, wisdom, and grace of Jesus Christ.
