Ears Flapping in the Wind

“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.” Revelation 3:20
Sometimes we don’t realize what is good for us, or for that matter, what is bad for us. When I was in college, I had two roommates, Lisa and Deborah (we called her Deb).
Lisa had a cocker spaniel named Millie, Millie was a character. Sometimes, especially at bedtime, we’d let her out in the backyard to take care of business, and when she was ready to come back in, she would stand by the door. However, at times she thought it would be fun to trick us and run when we opened the door to let her in. Unfortunately, she didn’t realize it wasn’t funny to us because we wanted to go to bed!
We lived across the street from the university, so we would walk to campus—and of course, there were always times when we would run late for class, and Millie would dart out the front door as if she had a mission to meet. The more we chased her, the more she would run—and it drove us crazy! The only way Millie would come to us was if we got in the car and looked as if we were going to leave. Then she’d come running with her ears flapping in the wind and jump in the car. We’d drive around the block, and that would suffice her.
Sometimes, as humans, we run to things that may not be good for us. Or we wander aimlessly through life searching for meaning. Millie didn’t know that running off into the street or away from us was dangerous. She could have been stolen or gotten hit by a car. But thankfully, that never happened because although she was the family pet, she was our baby, and we loved her unconditionally.
We have a Father who dearly loves us, too, and no matter how often we stray or run away from Him, His arms are always open to receive us. All we need to do is believe and understand that we are all sinners in need of salvation. But we must confess our sins, accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, and allow Him to change us.
Psalm 119:11 says, “Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You,” and Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” But praise the Lord for the next two verses that say, “Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed.”
Of course, Millie couldn’t comprehend her actions because she was a dog. However, she did know we would always open the door and let her in because of our love and forgiveness. As human beings, we don’t know the day or the hour when we will be called to rest. The door will not always be open to us, and that’s why it’s important to accept Christ into our lives while we have the chance.
Don’t get caught with your ears flapping in the wind! Allow Jesus to guide you, and see the blessings He has in store for you.
