DBF-001-048 — GOD IS OUR REFUGE AND STRENGTH
Scripture: Psalm 46:1 (ESV)
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
Every day seems to bring another reason for concern. We hear about wars, political conflict, economic uncertainty, suffering, sickness, and increasing hostility toward the Christian faith. If we allow these things to control our thoughts, fear can quickly replace our confidence in God.
Psalm 46 reminds us that our security has never depended upon the stability of this world. Our security rests in the unchanging character and sovereign power of God.
Notice that Scripture does not merely say that God provides a refuge. It says that God Himself is our refuge. He does not promise His people a life without trouble. He promises His presence and strength in the middle of trouble. The entire psalm describes circumstances so severe that the earth gives way, mountains fall into the sea, nations rage, and kingdoms totter. Yet God’s people are told not to fear because “The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.”
This truth must change the way we face our daily difficulties. When circumstances become uncertain, our first response should not be panic, anger, or discouragement. We should deliberately turn our attention toward God. We should remember what He has revealed about Himself in His Word and trust Him even when we cannot understand what He is doing.
Personal Application
Today, examine what is occupying your thoughts. If fear about tomorrow is controlling you, bring that fear before God. If ministry responsibilities seem overwhelming, remember that the ministry belongs to Jesus Christ, not to us. If personal difficulties are exhausting you, remember that your strength does not come entirely from your own ability to endure.
God is our refuge. God is our strength. God is present with His people.

Before allowing the pressures of today to control your thoughts, stop for a few quiet minutes and read Psalm 46 slowly. Then identify one burden that you have been trying to carry in your own strength.
