Like a Tree Planted by the Rivers of Water
The location of planting determines the long-term condition of the tree. A tree planted next to an inexhaustible water source does not suffer during drought as much as one planted on a dry hillside.
The "rivers of water" signify divine sustenance, the Word of God, which the preceding verses describe as the delight of the blessed person who meditates on it day and night. The one who meditates on the Word is a tree planted by the river. Its roots run deep into the streams of divine truth, and from those roots, the tree's visible life- its fruit, its leaves, its stability- is sustained.
Notice the comprehensive promise: "whatever he does shall prosper." Not some things, not only the religious things, but whatever. Business, family, ministry, relationships, creative endeavours; all of it falls under the prospering hand of God when the root system is deep in the Word.
