Christ, Our Holdfast
A seahorse is a tiny animal in a giant ocean. To make matters worse, for being a fish, it’s not an adept swimmer. To compensate, the seahorse often attaches itself by its prehensile tail to a spot known as a “holdfast,” such as a piece of coral. A holdfast is a seahorse’s anchor, a lifesaver from the sea’s powerful currents.
To the church at Thyatira, to the faithful in the Dark Ages, to all the remnant in the storms of affliction, Jesus calls you to “hold fast.” In Greek, the word is krateo, which means to use one’s strength, to seize, to keep. When a person holds fast in this manner, he is actively putting forth effort.
We have a duty here on Earth; we are commissioned by Christ Himself. We are not just passively waiting, twiddling our thumbs until He returns. We are holding onto the everlasting gospel with all of our might, exercising faith at every step. This is a determination with an eye turned to the fulfillment of this promise: “Christ in you, the hope of glory” (Colossians 1:27). This is an earnest clinging onto Him, as Jacob did when he wrestled with the Savior, saying, “I will not let You go unless You bless me!” (Genesis 32:26).
Paul declared, “Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession” (Hebrews 4:14). “This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, … even Jesus, having become High Priest forever” (6:19, 20). Jesus rose from the dead to ascend into the heavenly sanctuary. He is there now, performing the duties of a High Priest as our Advocate before the Father. Even now, Christ is doing His utmost to save every soul who desires to be saved. And it is when He has finished this service that He will return to take us home. This is the ultimate promise given by Christ; this is the supreme hope on which we stake our belief—His second coming. This is our anchor; this is our holdfast.
My Savior and Redeemer, through the storms of trial, establish my faith in Your Word and help us to hold fast to Your promises until You come.
