The Morning Star.

The last of Jesus’ promises to the church of Thyatira was the gift of “the morning star.” Christ afterward revealed the identity of the morning star: “I, Jesus, …. am … the Bright and Morning Star” (Revelation 22:16).

The letter to Thyatira was the longest of the seven, correlating to the long period of persecution the church underwent. It stood as a beacon of hope through the Dark Ages; it pointed to the Savior, the Source from which all lesser lights shine. By it can every saint recall the psalmist’s consoling words: “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning” (Psalm 30:5). Like Mary on resurrection morning, reaching Christ’s tomb and finding Him not dead but alive, so will our sorrow be turned to gladness when we see Him coming with the clouds to bring eternal life. These words are written just as much for us today as they were for the literal church and for the remnant in the Dark Ages.

Christ’s covenantal promise is also connected to Bible prophecy: “So we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts” (2 Peter 1:19). Think about the period of time represented by the church of Thyatira: the Dark Ages. The Dark Ages in and of itself was a time prophecy, the 1,260-day prophecy, as revealed through Scripture. If we “heed” that prophecy—and others—it does something to our hearts. Prophecy is not just about numbers and dates and events. All Bible prophecy was given “by the Holy Spirit” (v. 21); it is used by the Holy Spirit to sanctify our hearts, that the Morning Star can abide within us. It is a light that leads us to the Light.

In fact, these very letters to the seven churches are themselves prophecies: “Hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” Will you heed? Will you hear?

Spirit of the living God, unfold the truths of Your prophetic word to me that Jesus, the Morning Star, may arise in my heart.
