Nothing but the Truth.
The word “amen” here is derived from the Hebrew term ‘aman, which means faithful, trustworthy, verified. Thus, Jesus is faithful: “He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it” (1 Thessalonians 5:24). Jesus is trustworthy: “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You” (Isaiah 26:3). Jesus is verified: “You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me” (John 5:39). Jesus is indeed “the Faithful and True Witness.”
Christ’s next epithet, “the Beginning of the creation of God,” needs clarification. In the Greek, the word for “Beginning” is arche. While arche can mean the first in a series, like our definition of the word “beginning,” it can also mean the active source by which anything comes into being. A look into Scripture tells us plainly to apply the latter meaning here: When describing Jesus, the apostle John declared, “All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made” (John 1:3).
The apostle Paul similarly, when speaking of Jesus, stated, “For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth. … All things were created through Him” (Colossians 1:16). In other words, Jesus Christ is our Creator; He is the Author “of the creation of God.”
So, why did Jesus choose to describe Himself in this specific manner to the church of Laodicea? This church was blind and needed to hear from the “Faithful and True Witness.” The letter to the last of the seven churches prophetically applies to those living at the very end of time. As we will see in Revelation 14, Earth’s final battle will hinge in a very special way on the creatorship of Jesus Christ. God’s last remnant will stake their lives upon this fact—and they will do so without a doubt simply because Christ is “the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness.”
Christ Jesus, You are faith; You are truth. You “cannot lie” (Titus 1:2). May I love truth so much that I will never believe the enemy’s lies.
