The Lukewarm Church.
Today honored as a UNESCO World Heritage Centre and one of the most ancient hot springs in the world, Hierapolis-Pamukkale was already famous in the days of the apostle John. Its mineral-rich waters, 96 degrees Fahrenheit year-round and believed to cure various kinds of diseases, were coveted in the region’s nearby cities, including in Laodicea. However, by the time the waters reached Laodicea, some six miles away from the source, they were a less-than-satisfying lukewarm temperature.
This symbolizes a fatal flaw of many Christians living in the last days. Prophetically, the letter to Laodicea represents the time from ad 1844 onward, to the very end of the world. This is the era in which we are currently living. If you believe in the God of the Bible and desire to follow Him wholeheartedly, then this message, in particular, concerns you!
What is it like when a person is “cold”? A cold person realizes that he needs to get warm. Applied in a spiritual sense, he is aware that he desperately needs Christ. Like the tax collector in the parable, he sees his own helplessness and in humility will “not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’” (Luke 18:13).
What is it like when a person is “hot”? A person is hot when he acts upon conviction. He is burning to live out the truths of God’s Word in his life. He is fully committed, fully devoted, and fully surrendered. He is a person on fire, “for our God is a consuming fire” (Hebrews 12:29). His is a heart of love, “for God is love” (1 John 4:8).
Jesus would rather have us “hot” doing good works for God (Titus 2:14). But even “cold” at times can be good, like a refreshing cup of water (Proverbs 25:25). What’s most important is that we are not lukewarm, which in this case was nauseous and undesirable. To be lukewarm is to be content with where you are, especially when you are not where you need to be.
What is your spiritual temperature?
Lord, I do not naturally like to be uncomfortable. But I know that I must be made to see my need of You daily. Make me cold or hot so that I may glorify You.
