Blessed December
What Is the “More Excellent Way”?
“But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way” (1 Corinthians 12:31).
The apostle Paul makes a deeply profound statement that many have missed.
He encourages believers to seek and desire spiritual gifts. However, he finished the verse by telling them, “I am going to show you a ‘more’ excellent way!”
The Greek words used in this passage are very enlightening. The word “more” implies a higher or greater way.
The word “excellent,” implies superiority, excellence, preeminence, exceeding greatness.
And the Greek word for “way,” suggests a well-traveled or better way to go.
So Paul is essentially teaching believers that they should keep desiring spiritual gifts.
However, he desires to show them an exceedingly greater and well-traveled way to go.
So the question is, what exactly is this exceedingly greater and far better way to travel this life?
All we need to do is read the very next chapter where Paul launches into what the “more excellent way” is.
Most people refer to 1 Corinthians 13 as the love chapter. This is the more excellent way Paul is trying to get believers to see and walk in.
Many believers misunderstand this chapter by thinking Paul is telling them how they must act and function.
I can’t tell you how many services I have sat in where the preachers read 1 Corinthians Chapter 13 and made people feel condemned because their lifestyles did not measure up to what Paul is saying love is.
It isn’t called the “do chapter” but the love chapter.
Paul isn’t condemning or rebuking people for not walking in love. He isn’t giving them a to-do list to follow and obey to prove to the world they are walking in love.
He is showing them how to walk in God’s love for them but to do that, he has to explain to them what agape love really is and how it is expressed and experienced.

Most believers feel condemned or unworthy when reading 1 Corinthians Chapter 13 because their lives don’t reflect the description of love in that chapter.
But keep in mind, Paul is showing them a “more excellent way,” not rebuking them for failing to walk in a truth they never knew or understood.
He is introducing them to a reality that is greater and exceeds the way they had been living up to that moment.
Jesus declared He is the way.
He showed us that His Father is love, and they are one in purpose.
When we walk in the love God has for us, our lives will mirror His excellence in all we do.
God bless you all
