Worship in Heaven.
Falling down before someone is an act of humility, submission, and worship. In this passage, we see that the living creatures and the 24 elders worship God as their Creator. He made all things, so they all owe their existence and adoration to Him.
This scene around the throne is also prophetic: The redeemed on earth will emulate what those living creatures and those elders are doing. We all will worship God, giving Him “glory and honor and thanks.”
What about those crowns? God is, after all, the Ruler of the Universe. If so, why are the elders wearing crowns, which they “cast” before His throne? God has given authority to these elders—and will give authority to us! In 2 Timothy 2:12, we read, “If we endure, we shall also reign with Him.” Revelation 20:4 says, “And they lived and reigned with Christ.” We also will cast our crowns before God in acknowledgment of His supremacy and wisdom.
This picture of beings falling down and casting crowns has roots in images that would be familiar to John. When an ancient king surrendered, he would cast his crown at the feet of the victorious king. Roman legions would carry an image of their emperor—such as Domitian, under whom John was exiled to Patmos—and a vanquished ruler would have to place his crown before that image.
We who are believers have also been conquered, not by force or in hostility, but by the love of God. Whatever crowns we may have gained in this life we will gladly cast at God’s feet!
Heavenly Ruler, we worship and adore You, and we are thankful for Your care for us and for sending Jesus so that we may be saved. Thank You for loving us; help us to always love You.
