Only One Qualified.
What are some of the most demanding jobs in the world? Tasked with saving lives, healthcare workers rank near the top. Oil rig workers have a physically and mentally taxing job with long hours in a dangerous environment. And working for the military can mean putting your life on the line.
As John saw a sealed scroll in the hand of God the Father, a “strong angel” suddenly appeared and proclaimed with a “loud voice, ‘Who is worthy to open the scroll and to loose its seals?’” No one steps up to this demanding job.
Loud voices are meant to grab our attention. Later in Revelation, John says, “Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, ‘Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down’” (12:10). Loud voices are connected to key events in Revelation.
It is the work of Satan to hush the voices of heaven and to quiet the proclamation of the gospel. His favorite tactic is to turn people away from Bible truth and focus on their own lost condition. He accuses us day and night, dragging us into a state of despair until we are only awakened by a loud voice that points us to our hope in “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29).
John discovers that “no one in heaven or on the earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll.” No one in the entire universe could sign up for this job. No created being was qualified to undertake the task of opening the scroll. It was not because God was unwilling for anyone to open it. It was because the only One capable of carrying out His Father’s will had now ascended to heaven.
Lord, when the devil tries to drown out the message of hope, may a loud voice from heaven arrest my attention.
