Jesus before Pilate

Luke 23:1-5 CEB Step Stone The whole assembly got up and led Jesus to Pilate and

began to accuse him. They said, "We have found this man misleading our people, opposing the payment of taxes to Caesar, and claiming that he is the Christ, a king."

Pilate asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" Jesus replied, "That's what you say."

Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, "I find no legal basis for action against this man."

But they objected strenuously, saying, "He agitates the people with his teaching throughout Judea--starting from Galilee all the way here."

What Jesus actually said

Taxes

Matthew 22:17-22 So tell us what you think; Does the Law allow people to pay taxes to Caesar or not?"

Knowing their evil motives, Jesus replied, "Why do you test me, you hypocrites?

Show me the coin used to pay the tax." And they brought him a denarion.

"Whose image and inscription is this?" he asked.

"Caesar's," they replied. Then he said, "Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God."

When they heard this they were astonished, and they departed.

Mark 12:14-17 They came to him and said, "Teacher, we know that you're genuine and you don't worry about what people think. You don't show favoritism but teach God's way as it really is. Does the Law allow people to pay taxes to Caesar or not? Should we pay taxes or not?"

Since Jesus recognized their deceit, he said to them, "Why are you testing me? Bring me a coin. Show it to me."

And they brought one. He said to them, "Whose image and inscription is this?" "Caesar's," they replied.

Jesus said to them, "Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God." His reply left them overcome with wonder.

Romans 13:6-7 You should also pay taxes for the same reason, because the authorities are God's assistants, concerned with this very thing.

So pay everyone what you owe them. Pay the taxes you owe, pay the duties you are charged, give respect to those you should respect, and honor those you should honor.

Claiming who He actually was

Questioned by Pilate

Matthew 27:11 Jesus was brought before the governor. The governor said, "Are you the king of the Jews?" Jesus replied, "That's what you say."

Mark 15:2 Pilate questioned him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" Jesus replied, "That's what you say."

Teaching Galilee, Judea and Beyond

Matthew 28:19-20 Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

teaching them to obey everything that I've commanded you. Look, I myself will be with you every day until the end of this present age."

Mark 16:15-16 He said to them, "Go into the whole world and proclaim Whoever believes and is the good news to every creature.

Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever doesn't believe will be condemned.

Luke 24:46-49 He said to them, "This is what is written; the Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day,

and a change of heart and life for the forgiveness of sins must be preached in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.

You are witnesses of these things.

Look, I'm sending to you what my Father promised, but you are to stay in the city until you have been furnished with heavenly power."

John 20:21 Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father sent me, so I am sending you."
