The Song of Redemption.
Studies have shown that singing results in relaxation and happiness. It lowers blood pressure and releases endorphins. But guaranteed, no song will compare to the joy that this “new song” will bring.
Those who start off this song are the 24 elders and the four beings situated around God’s throne. While it seems they are singing about what Christ has done for them personally, a more accurate translation points to a different conclusion: The elders and beings are instead referring to the multitudes of people “out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation” whom Christ delivered.
Jesus will have “redeemed” them, “made [them] kings and priests,” and, thus, they “shall reign on the earth.” As Christ said, “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many” (Matthew 20:28).
This song is “new” because it refers to an act done only once in the history of the world: Christ’s sacrifice and our redemption. Jesus’ sacrifice, though reviled and ridiculed on Earth, is praised beyond all measure in heaven.
Revelation 1:6 is repeated here: Christ’s redemption will instate us as “kings and priests.” These two terms—“kings” representing the state and “priests” representing the church—denote the ultimate government. Christ is our High Priest and will ultimately be King of all. In the new Earth, where God’s perfect law of love will reign, we will look to Christ as our example. We will reflect His obedient priesthood and humble kingship.
But before that glorious day, there will be a most insidious and counterfeit union of church and state on this earth that claims to represent the perfect government of heaven. We’ll learn more details about this in the later chapters of Revelation.
Our High Priest and King, we lift our voices in praise to You as You lead us to the celestial city by the light of Your cross.
