The Heavenly Host, Part 1.

The “new song” continues to swell. Now the angels join in the chorus; what is the reason behind their praise for Christ?

According to the Bible, angels, like all creatures, were created by Jesus (Colossians 1:16). They are incredibly strong; indeed, a single angel took out an entire army of Assyrians in one night (2 Kings 19:35). They are often described as God’s powerful legions: They were in the “chariots of fire all around Elisha” (6:17); they were the “more than twelve legions of angels” (Matthew 26:53) waiting to come to Jesus’ aid in the garden of Gethsemane.

But not all angels are devoted to God. Angels, like ourselves, have free will. Tragically, some chose to follow Satan when he rebelled, joining his army when “war broke out in heaven” (Revelation 12:7). But Satan’s war in heaven was a war of words; he “who deceives the whole world” (v. 9) peddled fraud and trafficked slander against the Almighty (Ezekiel 28:16, 18).

Long before he cast doubt upon the character of God in Eden, the devil sowed it amongst the angels in heaven. If he enticed Eve to disobey God through shadowy accusations (Genesis 3:1–5), what more might he have done to the “angels, who are greater in power and might” (2 Peter 2:11), and who are, as Revelation tells us here, beyond number? He would have sown a masterpiece of darkness.

It was through the devil that the cosmic controversy between eternal life and eternal death was born; the angels have an active role on its battlefield. “Ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation” (Hebrews 1:14), the angels of God “do His word” (Psalm 103:20), carrying out the will of God in assisting His people. At this very moment, “ten thousand times ten thousand” stand faithfully by God’s side, working for your behalf, and will continue to serve Him throughout all eternity. They have chosen their side in this war—have you?

Loving God, how vast is Your love, that You would send “thousands of thousands” of powerful messengers to the aid of Your fallen and weak creation!
