Amazing Facts

December 25th

The Lamb Opens the Seals.

As the first seal is broken, the first living creature invites John to peer into the time of Ephesus, the first church. Each sequential seal reveals events that parallel each of the seven churches.

The first seal, announced by the first living creature, the lion, is a fitting representation of the work that we see accomplished, as there is a kingly rider who is “conquering” (v. 2). This reminds us of Jesus, “the Lion of the tribe of Judah” (Revelation 5:5). And so, on down, the first four seals are each announced by one of the living creatures in order of their appearance.

Who opens these seals? The Lamb. The fate of humanity is in the hands of the One who gave His life to redeem us. The One who stands before the Father for us is He who would rather die than leave us in a world of sin and suffering.

Shadows of this glorious truth can be seen in the days of the Exodus. Moses had climbed Mount Sinai and was with God for forty days. The people, in the meantime, fell into apostasy and began to worship a golden calf. When Moses came down and saw what the people had done, “he cast the tablets out of his hands and broke them at the foot of the mountain” (Exodus 32:19), for the people had broken the commandments of God.

“The wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23), but Moses, with compassion in his heart, marched back up the mountain in an attempt to atone for the peoples’ sins. He first pled for mercy, then, realizing the enormity of their sin, he threw himself on the line, pledging his life on behalf of theirs, saying, “but if not, I pray, blot me out of Your book which you have written” (Exodus 32:32).

This shadow reveals to us the reality that we find fulfilled in the book of Revelation. Here in the last book of the Bible, the One to whom all the Scriptures point is clearly revealed.

Father God, thank you for the precious gift of Your Son. Help us to understand and appreciate His work on our behalf to secure for us a place in Your everlasting home.
