As the Ultimate Leader, Jesus expressed His desire to see His disciples do the will of the Father, by keeping His commandments and remaining in His love (John 15:10). But He went further in our scriptural passage today to declare not only His lordship but His friendship to His disciples. What a glorious privilege to become a friend to the Only Begotten Son of God! Friends, he called them, but with a condition attached, "If ye do whatsoever I command you" (v. 14b). This requires nothing but undiluted loyalty and obedience to the Master. He requires the same attitude and relationship between every Christian leader and his followers. That is an intimate relationship of reciprocal affection and submission to the will of the leader by the followers.
This can only be possible under an atmosphere of love and total commitment. Apostle Paul demonstrated the same attitude towards his team members and converts (Romans 16). We should emulate these virtues and do likewise as Jesus commanded. If Jesus related with His disciples so amicably, calling them friends, then Christian leaders should in the same way relate with their followers with much openness, making them to know the will of God for their lives and the prospects that abide in such intimate relationship. Psalm 25:14 says God reveals His covenant to His beloved, His friends - Men and women that do His will, obey and give Him undivided loyalty. Abraham was called His friend and David, the man after His heart.
If Jesus could go all the way to lay down His life for the sake of His friends (John 5:13, Romans 5:8), what greater love can we imagine? He did not withhold the knowledge of God from them, since they are friends and not servants. Through His death and resurrection, we became joint heirs with Him. If so, then, leaders and their followers are friends; in fact, children of the same Father and should therefore continue to relate in the love of the Father through Jesus Christ.
