Witchcraft is the use of evil powers for the purpose of manipulating or controlling events, people or the future. Usually, when such powers are used by a female, the practice is known as witchcraft, but when they are used by a male, the practice is known as wizardry. Obviously, the evil powers are satanic powers. Exodus 22:18 says, "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live." Witchcraft was punishable by death in the Old Testament. But the passage is to be read in the light of the New Testament. For example, Jesus said in John 8:11 to a woman found committing adultery, an act punishable by death under the Old Testament, "Neither do I condemn thee, go, and sin no more". Clearly, witchcraft, like adultery, is an abomination to God. Witches and wizards are not to be killed physically now; but their evil powers must be killed. Death does not necessarily mean physical death. When the spirit of witchcraft or the witchcraft power in a person is rendered ineffective in relation to a victim or prospective victim, the spirit or power has died. In a sense, all the powers exercised by satan in carrying out his activities may be described as witchcraft powers. 1 Samuel 15:23 says, "For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft and stubbornness is an iniquity and idolatry..." Colossians 3:5 describes covetousness as idolatry. The act of witchcraft is rebellion against God. It is, in essence, idolatry. It reflects rejecting God and joining the camp of the devil.
Signs indicating that witchcraft may be, or may have been in operation include demon-possession, fragmentation of the soul, dream-pollution, depression, insanity, marital instability, untimely death, ungodly fear, unbrokenness, pride, demonic visions, spiritual blindness, destiny-manipulation, poverty, backsliding, brain-pollution, wandering, drunkenness, broken homes, wrong location, tongue-trap, confusion, suicide, evil imagination evil foundation, worry, anxiety, hearing evil voices, envy and jealousy. Indeed, the works of the flesh mentioned in Galatians 5:19 to 21 reflect signs of the operation of witchcraft because they are acts of rebellion against God.
In order to be delivered from witchcraft, we must be born again. As a Christian soldier, you should walk as a child of light. The Bible admonishes, "And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them (Ephesians 5:11).
