What is it like to be a disciple and hate your father, mother, wife, children, brethren, sisters, and your own life?

When my family became missionaries this became a part of our life. We had to live this passage. When we told the family we were going to go halfway across the world to tell people about Jesus the responses were varied. My dad was very supportive, but my mother said “We won’t get to see the grand kids.” While she prays for us and supports us financially she was not very approving of our choice. I struggled with this as we sold our house and raised our funds to move to the Mission field.

I recently saw a reel from a preacher online. I can’t remember who but he said when we become disciples of Christ we live this verse as we love Christ more and more our father will say “you don’t love me anymore.” You’ll hear from your mother “you’re not coming home for Christmas don’t you love us anymore?” As we become disciples our love for family does not change. But our love for Christ, our affiliation as a disciple becomes greater. We go out and make disciples. Holidays are great days to make disciples.

This recently happened again while on the field. I had to tell my parents we can’t call on Christmas week, we video call them every week, as we will be busy working at church all week. The response “what you won’t call? We sure will miss you!” While my parents are Christian’s and have an understanding think of those who are not Christians. The feeling is that my child must hate me, i can’t come over on Sunday because he has church. By the way we had a great Christmas week and were able to minister to many during this time.

“If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭14‬:‭26‬…

“So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭14‬:‭33‬ ‭
