Amazing Facts

January 13

The Angel from the East.

John the Baptist served as a forerunner to the first advent of the Messiah. He proclaimed, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!” (Matthew 3:3). The time was near that Jerusalem would be judged, and soon destroyed, but not without warning. The Jewish nation was invited to partake of the new covenant in Christ. It was not until her leadership had decided for or against the Messiah that the fate of its city was finally sealed.

This history comes to us as an illustration of the Second Advent. Preceding the coming of Jesus, an angel goes forth with “the seal of the living God.” Just as Jesus’ coming is said to be as lightning flashing from the east to the west, so also does this angel arise from the east to prepare the way. It holds true, then, that the message of this angel is similar to that of John’s: “Repent!”

“The solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: ‘The Lord knows those who are His,’ and, ‘Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity’” (2 Timothy 2:19). We become the children of God and are sealed by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:9; Ephesians 1:13).

Jesus encourages us that we may receive this gift by trusting in His promise, saying, “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him” (Luke 11:13).

The outward manifestation of the reception of the Holy Spirit is the keeping of God’s law. “Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments” (1 John 2:3). In particular, the Sabbath of the fourth commandment is highlighted as a special token of this covenant with Christ (Ezekiel 20:12).

The message of this angel is now resounding throughout the whole world. Are you ready to meet the Savior?

Loving Lord, thank You for sending this angel at the right time! Keep us close to You and seal us with Your seal!
