The mark of the beast, which we will learn about in the thirteenth chapter, is received on the hand or the forehead. In contrast, the seal of God is placed only upon the forehead. What is the significance of this detail?
The hand signifies a person’s works. “For the LORD your God has blessed you in all the work of your hand” (Deuteronomy 2:7). “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might” (Ecclesiastes 9:10). In the case of receiving the mark of the beast, it is possible for a person to outwardly comply with religious mandates in order to avoid persecution, even if they do not agree with the beast power. Those who do so will be the ones who receive the mark of the beast “in the hand.”
But the forehead represents a person’s heart and mind. “You shall lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes” (Deuteronomy 11:18). The genuine keeping of the law is only possible when it originates in the heart.
More important, perhaps, is the fact that a person cannot save or seal himself. It is the message of the angel and the work of God to carry out the sealing. The law of God must be written on the heart by the Spirit of God. No other instrument can do it.
God promises to do this very thing for us: “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them” (Ezekiel 36:26, 27). Do you believe these words? Will you accept His invitation?
Father God, help us to be ready for what is soon to occur. And seal us in keeping Your commandments, which are not grievous.
