Amazing Facts

January 16

We’re God’s Children!

The twelve tribes listed in Revelation 7 are ordered in a way that is not found anywhere else in the Bible. The tribe of Dan is excluded from this list, most likely because it was the foremost tribe in promoting idolatry in Israel (Judges 18:30, 31).

Judah means “I will praise the Lord.” When Judah was young and among his brothers, he was willing to sell his brother for thirty pieces of silver (Genesis 37:26). Yet through his life experiences, and particularly with Tamar (Genesis 38), Judah was actually willing to sell himself to save his brother (Genesis 43:8, 9)—a complete turnaround from the man he used to be!

Reuben means “He has looked on me.” He was a man of little backbone, being unwilling to stand up against his brothers to save Joseph (Genesis 37:21). He was “unstable as water” (Genesis 49:4) and at one point even had an affair with his father’s concubine (Genesis 35:22). He was envious that Joseph would receive the birthright as a young man, but when he was older, he was not envious when Benjamin received a “double portion” (Genesis 43:34), nor did he show himself a coward in the face of danger any longer (Genesis 42:37).

Gad means “Given good fortune.” The Bible tells us, “[of] Gad, a troop shall tramp upon him, but he shall triumph at last” (Genesis 49:19). The tribe of Gad represents those who have been overcome by many temptations but who finally turn to God for strength and deliverance. Even though the devil has overcome them, Christ can make them more than conquerors if they turn to Him with all their hearts.

Can you relate to these individuals? What an inspiring testimony of what God can do in the life of those who surrender to Him at last!

Abba, Father God, thank You for creating us and for saving us through the death of Your Son. Please refine our characters that we, too, may be overcomers at last.
