Revelation 12 | Dragon War

Revelation 12 opens with a woman clothed with the sun, and with the moon underfoot. Then a dragon with seven heads whose tail sweeps a third of the stars from the sky. Typical Verse of the Day avoids this stuff, I say bring it! But how do we understand it? Revelation 12:3

“Then another sign appeared in heaven: an enormous red dragon with seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns on its heads.”

Revelation is full of symbols. To decipher, we follow clues around the Bible. The woman with sun and moon point to Joseph’s dream in Genesis. The woman is Israel. She’s pregnant—that points to Jesus. Another verse reveals that the dragon is Satan (Revelation 12:9), and it appears that those stars represent a third of the angels who followed Satan to become demons.
