The priests and temple officials were involved in dishonest trade, greed, and exploitation. They treated the temple like a hideout for thieves, using it for their own gain. In doing so, they stole from both God and people. and the temple was a sanctuary to them: They hid behind a facade of religion and devotion while taking advantage of widows, stealing from people, and engaging in greed and excess.
