Darkness at Noon.
A remote, rugged corner in Nevada is considered one of the darkest places on Earth. Massacre Rim has been designated as a Dark Sky Sanctuary for stargazers. The tiny communities in the area willingly minimize night lights to limit the impact of artificial light on the evening sky, giving visitors a chance to see God’s amazing cosmos in a way they can’t in or around cities.
The fourth trumpet is marked by a darkness that goes deeper than the absence of physical light. Guided by the pattern of the seven churches and seven seals, we remember that the fourth church, Thyatira, is marked by “that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, to teach and seduce My servants” (Revelation 2:20). This immoral woman symbolizes an apostate church.
Christ said, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life” (John 8:12). Light shines from Bible truth, as David said, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105). But in 1199, Pope Innocent III banned the reading of the Bible in private gatherings; the suppression of the Scripture only got worse from there.
This period, appropriately known as the Dark Ages, was one of biblical ignorance. The papal darkness under the fourth seal, when death was pervasive through the church, is seen in this fourth trumpet. Isaiah’s words well describe this time: “Darkness shall cover the earth, and deep darkness the people” (Isaiah 60:2). God’s Word was constrained, and those who preached Bible truth were hunted and killed. Even still, those lights shone out in the darkness.
On a clear night in Massacre Rim, people are stunned by the contrast of vivid stars shining over a dark world. May that describe your life!
Father God, You brought us from spiritual darkness into the light of Your Salvation. May we never forget You and Your ways.
