Triple Threat.

In the Old Testament, particularly harsh judgments are declared as woes. “Woe to the wicked! It shall be ill with him, for the reward of his hands shall be given him” (Isaiah 3:11). “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil” (Isaiah 5:20). “Woe to them, for they have fled from Me! Destruction to them, because they have transgressed against Me!” (Hosea 7:13)

As we are about to discover, the next three trumpets, called woes, are to reveal even more harsh punishments on papal Rome, a power that claims to worship God but has substituted piety with ritual and true worship with false rites. Instead of sinners confessing their sins to God, knowing “we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous” (1 John 2:1), a human is delegated to dispense forgiveness. Instead of freedom of conscience, state-sponsored religion is imposed.

And with increasing iniquity comes increasing judgment. Remember that God gave her “time to repent” (Revelation 3:21). These judgments were intended to bring the apostate church to repentance, but unfortunately, she refuses to repent. In fact, she, like the Pharoah of Egypt in the days of Moses, becomes hardened even more until the very end, when Christ comes to destroy this power “with the breath of His mouth and … the brightness of His coming” (2 Thessalonians 2:8).

Yet notice how the woe is pronounced upon the inhabitants of the earth. The judgments of God are not without effect on the people, the citizenry. Just as Pharoah, after each judgment, made life crueler for the Israelites, so too does Satan make life more burdensome for those living under their grip.

We are now entering into what is perhaps the most difficult section of the book of Revelation. May God grant us spiritual eyesight and wisdom as we approach the last three trumpets.

Jesus, may we always remember You as our Advocate with the Father. May we always do what You command, regardless of the world’s pressures.

For Further Study: Ezekiel 2:10; Hebrews 1:14; Psalm 103:20
