Deception Increases.

The earliest known use of keys was in ancient Babylon and Egypt nearly six thousand years ago. One key was found in the ruins of Nineveh, the capital of Assyria; the bulky wood device would have been used to open wooden pin locks.

In today’s verse, a “star” is given “the key to the bottomless pit.” We’ve seen this star before. In Revelation 8:10, we learned that in the time of the third trumpet, “a great star fell from heaven,” which represented Satan (Luke 10:18) bringing his evil to this world.

But then Satan, who at the point of the fifth trumpet has been on this earth for many years, is given this mysterious key. Why? We learn from Revelation 20 that an angel with a “key to the bottomless pit and a great chain” (v. 1) will bind Satan “for a thousand years” (v. 2) and “cast him into the bottomless pit” (v. 3). Herein lies the “key” to understanding this verse: A key can either let someone in or lock him in. Without the key, the devil is locked in “that he should deceive the nations no more” (v. 3). Satan is, therefore, bereft of power.

But when Satan is given the key, it follows that he is given permission—temporarily—to carry out his work of spreading deception and darkness. The fifth trumpet is the first of three “woes” announced in Revelation 8:13, predicting a more intense judgment falling on the earth. God allows satanic forces to carry out part of this work by withdrawing His restrictive hand.

Some have defined “the bottomless pit” as hell, but a careful reading of Scripture shows this to be incorrect. Also known as “abyss,” this deep void is not the lake of fire ignited at the future judgment; rather, it describes a place of confinement for Satan’s rebellious demons (Luke 8:31), the location of the beast warring against God’s people (Revelation 11:7; 17:8), and the desolate earth after the Second Coming (20:3).

Heavenly Father, as the forces of evil grow in this world, may Your protecting hand be over Your people. May we listen to the trumpet warnings and be ready for Your soon return.
