Good morning to everyone. Grace and peace be with you.

What is Hamburger Helper? A gimmick. That is what it is. A quick way to throw something together rather inexpensive. Mind you, I have, even recently, eaten my fair share of Hamburger Helper. As a matter of fact, when I was younger, I thought you had to have it as a staple in your house. Almost like it was a requirement to be in the cupboard. But…if you think about it … the meal is only pasta noodles of some kind, a sauce (most likely gravy or cheese), and meat. Three ingredients. Why do we spend the $2 on one boxed meal when we can do the same thought process from scratch for just a little more and it (1) taste better and (2) get three or four meals out of it? Simply put, it is easier to dump, cook, serve.

WE are conditioned to find the simplest route to all objectives. It has been drilled into us from day one. As early as when we learn to walk to the day we die, we are conditioned for the simple. Simple is better. Work smarter, not harder. The ‘idea’ was to make life easier so that we could do more, but what (more) do we do? Work more? Spend frivolously more? Hide inside our electronics more? Exactly. When we could be doing more for our neighbor or family, we are now self-consumed with giving ourselves more.

I understand that in today’s world, the easy meal is the only meal that some get. But when we equate the simplicity of Hamburger Helper to our prayer life or our walk with Christ … think about that for a second. More than likely, you have been with me long enough to see where this is going.

With the aid of electronics, phones-earbuds, we can listen to the Word of God and never open a bible. (guilty) We can claim that we are getting more bang for our buck and accomplishing more in less time. (guilty) Our position can be that our mind scatters when ‘reading.’ (guilty) But do you know what … when you are listening to the Word, how much of your attention is truly on the word and not some financial report, one of your co-workers’ attitudes, the kids fighting, which bill does not get paid this month? (guilty)

The simple items are not the problem, we are. We have been conditioned that in order to be successful, we must be able to multi-task … juggle like a circus clown … and remain positive at all times. This is not what God intended for us. He wants us to have a simple life. A life with Him.

When we take and make sufficient quality time with Him, our lives are so much simpler. When we put Him first, truly first, the path is so much clearer. As we succumb to His simpler way, the enemy gets his cross hairs in a wad and sticks his nose in. He will make such compelling arguments, that we will see them as potentially positive outcomes and sometimes even do it his way.

My friends, simple is not always wrong, but quality is so much better. When you are fixing dinner, a quality meal from scratch not only tastes better, but is better for you. When diving into the Word, physically reading it is better than merely listening. I know that when I was listening to the gospels, I would hear something and then have to hope that I remembered to look it up physically because it caught my attention. If I had been just sitting and reading, I could have done my cross reference then and not worried about it.

Simple is good. Please understand that I am not saying that we should not use the gifts that He has provided. What I am saying is that do not rely on the electronic gifts for a hundred percent of your communication with him. Sit in silence and focus on His Word. I can tell you that He is really talking to me about this. Something that I intend to start today. What about you?

Be blessed today my friends.

***My purpose is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. – Colossians 2:2-3
