The Sound of War.
Sound travels at about 767 miles per hour; light at 186,000 miles per second. As such, we usually see something before we hear it. But remember how Joshua mistook the commotion of the Israelites worshiping the golden calf for “a noise of war” (Exodus 32:17)? Did you know that people have likewise mistaken the sound of a plague of locusts for an army? So the apostle John was spot on with his simile.

Additionally, wings often symbolize speed in Bible prophecy. (See, for example, Daniel 7:6.) And indeed, the Muslim armies were known in particular for the swiftness of their cavalry.
As for the scorpions’ tail, Isaiah symbolically used the tail as an indicator of false teachers. “The elder and honorable, he is the head; the prophet who teaches lies, he is the tail” (Isaiah 9:15).

The Islamic faith is based on the writings of Muhammad, a prophet who claimed to have transcribed messages from God and compiled them into the Quran. It is Muhammad, not Jesus, who the Muslims look to as their guide, the epitome of perfection. But the Bible says that Jesus Christ alone is “the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6).

Verse 10 points back to the 150 years of Revelation 9:5, during which Islam rose, a dark smoke of deception covering the Eastern Roman Empire, laying waste to all who would not convert to the faith. It is no coincidence that the false teachings of Rome, a kingdom also depicted in prophecy with iron (Daniel 2:33), similarly led the church into apostasy.

History also shows that the Turkish cavalry wore cuirasses, a medieval type of breastplate, protecting soldiers’ vital organs during battle. Fascinatingly, their cuirasses were also inscribed with verses from the Quran. The impenetrable iron strength of the Ottoman army, like the locust’s outer shell, was fueled by their religious zeal.

Notice the particular features of the locusts of the fifth trumpet repeated in today’s verses—the horses, the scorpions, the five months—but now with more detail.

Lord Jesus, by faith I ask You to cover me with Your “breastplate of righteousness” (Ephesians 6:14). Only You can protect me from the attacks of the enemy.

For Further Study: Jeremiah 46:23; Ezekiel 2:6; Luke 10:19
